Bumpass Hell boiling waters
The Colors of Bumpass Hell

Yellow As sulfur dioxide gas
escapes into the air, it leaves a
deposit of sulfur crystals.
White After volcanic rock has been
completely broken down by sufuric
acid, what is left is a white
powdery soil made up of silica and
kaolinite.
Black or Gray Volcanic rock not
completely broken down turns
either gray (clay) or black, an
iron-sulfide mineral better known
as "Fool's Gold".
Red or Tan Iron-rich mineral
compounds that are in the water
are deposited on the ground.
Yellow-Orange When the
sulfate-rich water evaporates at
the surface, colorful sulfate
minerals are left behind.
Green Alga grows in the cooler
part of the hot springs, on rocks,
in streams, or on the edges of the
hot pools.  Bacteria also lives here.
Off to a nice start in the morning - slept in until 7:00!
You wouldn't believe the incredible fields of lupines
everywhere.  There was the sweetest smell in the
air, coupled with the clicking of insects (cicadas?)
and the cries of the Stell
ers Jays.
