New London Mine - Applegate - February
On a beautiful February day, we drove to the
trailhead, unpacked the car, laced up the boots,
grabbed the walking sticks, and took off for the
trail. We were the only hikers, so every now and
then we did a little singing to deter any bears that
might be in the neighborhood. Probably scared off
a few birds, too!
The trail was nicely kept, but quite steep, so we
had many opportunities to look at the mines, the
lichen-covered rocks, and the old growth
madrones while I was catching my breath. When
we reached the top of the ridge, there was still
another hour of climbing to reach the ultimate top.
At that point, we would have run out of daylight, so
we turned around and headed back down. Round
trip was about five miles.
