This Gopher Snake (Pituophis catenifersayi) quietly and slowly inched along the riverbank until it
reached our picnic spot. BE saw it and handed me the camera.
The snake must have been around 5 feet long, and it carefully wended its way past me until I
couldn't resist touching it. At that point, it hustled into the grass and scurried away.
Fleeing is its first escape option, followed by various forms of rattlesnake mimicry.
